A New Twist on an Old Classic
A Message From Jesse Trevino
No More Excuses

Ben Franklin once said, "He that is good for making excuses is seldom good for anything else."

These words of wisdom ring true in both business and personal life. When faced with challenging situations, excuses are often the easy way out. Perhaps you don’t have enough time... you’re too tired... you don’t have enough money… you’re scared of failure. The first step toward achieving your goal is to realize that excuses stand in the way of your success.

In the early 1930s, an entrepreneur named Charles Darrow submitted a new idea for a board game to Parker Brothers. His idea was rejected with 52 reasons why it wouldn't sell, including the fact that nobody would be interested in a game about property trading. Darrow persisted, refusing to accept any excuses to give up. Today, more than 500 million players from around the globe enjoy this board game classic which is passed down from generation to generation, making it the best selling game of the 20th century.

Here’s the way I see it: we either have excuses, or we have results. Charles Darrow could have used many excuses to give up on his creation of Monopoly, but he was determined to succeed regardless of the challenges he faced.

At our printing firm, we believe that tight budgets and short time lines shouldn’t stand in your way of having marketing materials you are proud of. Give us a call today and we will help you get past your excuses and start seeing results.

Effective Use of Varnish

Just as varnish on a dresser or table protects the wood and gives it a nice finished look, the varnish used on printed pieces enhances their look and durability. If you are interested in using varnish on your next printing project, here are a few things you should know:
  • In-line press varnish, where the varnish is applied to the complete surface of the printed piece, is a relatively inexpensive way to add a lush finish, and may be less expensive than printing on glossier, cast-coated paper.

  • Spot varnish is a great way to maximize the contrast between matte and gloss surfaces. It allows you to apply varnish to a certain image or graphic on your printed piece, such as a logo or photo, while leaving the rest of the piece unvarnished.

  • While you may think of varnish as a glossy coating, a matte varnish can be used to protect your project from scuff marks without adding the shine of a glossy varnish.

  • Certain varnishes may yellow over time. If you have a project with a long shelf life, be sure to let our print shop know and we can help you find an appropriate varnish.

  • A UV varnish is applied off-line and is cured with ultraviolet light. This process gives the surface an exceptional gloss and rub resistance.
If you would like to use a varnish to polish off your printed pieces, it is important that you work closely with our print shop staff to ensure that your project will be completed to your specifications. It is our pleasure to help you navigate this process.

Marketing Tip
Please Hold

Did you know the average person spends 60 hours per year on-hold? Nearly 60 percent of callers hang up after being placed on hold for more than 45 seconds, and the majority of those callers do not call back.

While nobody likes to be put on hold, it’s often inevitable in today’s busy business world. “On hold advertising” not only decreases caller hang up and enhances your business’ image, but it’s a creative way to educate, inform, and entertain callers about products and services.

On hold advertising is also an easy way to reach your target audience, since callers have already made the first step by choosing to call you.

Instead of letting callers listen to dead air or local radio stations which are likely advertising other companies, why not take advantage of this opportunity to promote specials, answer frequently asked questions, direct callers to your web site, or thank callers for holding? You can also incorporate fun facts, interesting trivia, and seasonal ideas to keep your callers interested and eager to hear more.

CMYK vs. RGB Color Formats

Many people think color is color, right? Wrong! RGB and CMYK color formats are intended for completely different uses, even though the result of the two formats appears relatively the same to our eyes.

RGB (an acronym for red, green, and blue) is the appropriate color format for computer monitors because it references light. The important distinction here is that light, rather than ink, is used to reproduce an image. Just because a picture looks one way on a monitor or television screen does not mean that it will be reproduced accurately on paper.

CMYK (an acronym for cyan, magenta, yellow, and black) is the appropriate color format for printed materials. When your printer reproduces images, the four primary colors of ink are mixed together in varying shades and strengths.

An image that is in RGB mode is optimized for display on a computer monitor. In order to reproduce that same image using ink on paper, it must be converted to CMYK. After the conversion, there may be differences between what you see on the monitor and what you get back from the print shop. You can compensate for this by calibrating your monitor and through printing proofs to make sure your work is translating properly.

Folded Business Cards

Creative, folded business cards are a great way to make a lasting impression and ensure your prospects and customers keep your business card on hand.

There are many creative ways you can add value and grab attention with folded business cards. When determining how to utilize the extra space, give your target audience something useful that they’ll use over and over again, such as an events schedule, frequent customer discounts, or even punch card for free merchandise and services.

The extra space on folded business cards can also be used to extend your sales pitch. Not only can you feature your top products or services, but you can turn the inside of your card into a mini-billboard advertisement, providing a snapshot overview of your company each time a customer or prospects refers to your card.
